KANNUR: Congress leader M.M. Hassan has said that both religious and political brands of extremism should be strongly opposed.Inaugurating the Kerala NGO Association’s Kannur branch conference here on Thursday, Mr. Hassan said the Congress had never encouraged extremism for getting votes.

Calling for strong condemnation of the attack on T.J. Joseph, professor at Newman College, Thodupuzha, he said that violence could by no means protect any religion. Extremism of whatever forms should be opposed strongly. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had failed in containing extremism in the State, he added.Referring to the seizure of crude bombs from locations used by extremist groups, Mr. Hassan said the police should identify the source of these explosives.
