Description of festival (Legends, History, Customs related with the festival, Highlights):
The pooram at Sree Chinakkathoor Bhagavathy Temple, Palappuram, Palakkad, popularly known as Chinakkathoor Pooram, is one of the major pooram festivals of North Kerala. A grand procession with 33 caparisoned elephants in the evening and ‘panchavadyam’ (traditional orchestra) are the main attractions of the festival. On the seventeen days preceding the festival, ‘Tholpavakoothu’ (shadow puppetry) is staged in the temple in the evening. The festival is also an occasion to watch some rural art forms, including ‘Vellattu’, ‘Theyyam’ and ‘Poothanum Thirayum’. An interesting festival sight is the ceremonial processions in which 16 large decorated effigies are brought to the temple.
