KOCHI: Kerala Congress(M) leader K.M. Mani said here on Friday that the observations being made by the Church on political events should not be treated as an interference in political affairs.

Addressing a meet-the-press, he said that people’s welfare was the guiding factor behind such comments. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) which had aligned with Church representatives in the past has no right to criticise the clergy for making opinions on relevant political developments, he added.

Launching a scathing attack on the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, Mr. Mani said corruption was ruling the roost in the State. Up to 40 per cent of the funds had got lapsed in LDF-ruled local self-government institutions. He squarely blamed the government for the stalemate in the SmartCity project. Mafia rule is thriving in land, liquor, sand and lottery affairs. The Chief Minister who has expressed his displeasure over the way the lottery imbroglio is handled should dismiss the Finance Minister.
