Doctor drowned in backwaters

A doctor from Malappuram met a tragic end during a pleasure trip on the backwaters here on Friday. According to the police, Rajesh Prasanth, 49, a doctor with a private hospital at Kottackal in Malappuram, had arrived around 12 p.m. with a nine-member team for a houseboat cruise along the Vembanad Lake.

Around 1.30 p.m., when the group was passing near the Marthandam Kayal paddy polder, Dr. Prasanth is said to have slipped and fallen into the water.

Though the boat crew tried to save him, their attempts were in vain and the body could be retrieved hours later by the Fire and Rescue personnel. Dr. Prasanth is survived by his wife Sunitha and children, Roshan and Devika.
