Education Act is a historic achievement of Congress and UPA govt: Chennithala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Right to Education Act, 2009, is a historic achievement of the Congress and the United Progressive Alliance government, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala has said.Inaugurating a seminar on the Act, organised by the Vichar Vibhag of the KPCC here on Tuesday, Mr. Chennithala said on implementing the Act, India would become the 135t {+h} country that had made education a cardinal right.

This was another feather in the cap of the UPA government, which had implemented the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.Though the Directive Principles of the Constitution specify that providing free and compulsory education for all children below the age of 14 is a duty of the State, the number of children who are deprived of quality education is very high.On implementing the latest Act, elementary education will be made free for all children, including the differently abled, between 6 and 14 years of age. Drop-outs and those who have not been admitted to school too will get an opportunity to study.
