Government would soon introduce a centralised lockup in the State: Kodiyeri

KANNUR: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said here on Monday that the government would soon introduce a centralised lockup in the State.Speaking after inaugurating a building for the Jana Maithri Police Pain and Palliative Care Unit at the Kerala Armed Battalion IV Camp at Mangattuparamba, he said the first centralised lockup would be implemented on an experimental basis in Kottayam in December.

The new system was being established on the basis of a recommendation of the K.T. Thomas commission for police reforms to restructure existing lockups in the State, he added.The system was mooted to check use of third degree methods in police stations, he said. The Minister said the armed reserve and the local police wings in the State would be merged soon.He said the Bill for reforms in the police force was now under the consideration of the Assembly Select Committee.
