KOCHI: The wrong policies of the LDF government have sabotaged all development activities in the State, including that in the construction sector, said the Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy.Inaugurating the valedictory session of the district conference of the Building and Road Workers Federation (INTUC) here on Sunday, Mr. Chandy said that the government had lost interest in the welfare of workers. It is interested only in the funds of various welfare boards of workers. The government has diverted funds from various welfare boards to the State Treasury for overcoming the deep financial crisis into which it has plunged, he said.
The Finance Minister is resorting to gimmicks to give a rosy picture about the financial position of the government. The attempt to divert funds from the welfare fund boards to treasury is such a step. The Finance Minister also claimed that the government would earn a considerable amount by selling sand from various dams. The project was originally conceived by A.K. Antony, when he was the Chief Minister. V.S. Achuthanandan, who was the Leader of the Opposition at that time, vehemently opposed the proposal and launched agitations against the proposal. Eventually the project was dropped, Mr. Chandy said.
The UDF–led Opposition never opposed the State government’s proposal for removing sand. Even then, the State government failed to provide sand at fair price. The recently-introduced building rules and laws regarding fair value of land and registration of land were illegal and too harsh.
