Kozhikode: The State-wide indefinite strike called by the joint action committee of autorickshaw and taxi drivers entered the second day on Tuesday with a section of tourist taxi drivers in the district breaking ranks and plying their vehicles.

But the strike participants blocked the taxis transporting even patients to hospitals. At some places in the city, they deflated the tyres of the cars.Hundreds of passengers who had alighted at the railway station and the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus station were stranded.

The situation in rural areas, particularly the hill regions, was no different. Most people in rural belts depend more on utility vehicles than private buses to commute between mofussil towns. The talks between the leaders of the action committee and the Transport Minister will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday afternoon. The demands include an increase in fares and withdrawal of the decision to introduce fare meters in rural areas and the users’ fee on parking lots.
