The Kerala government has decided to relax rules relating to construction of highrise buildings in the state. From now on, it will not be mandatory to follow the Centre’s rule regarding fire safety in multistoried buildings.

Only the Kerala Municipality Building Rules will be applicable. When Jacob Thomas was the head of the Fire and Rescue Services, the rules regarding fire safety were stringent.

Difference of opinion had developed between Jacob Thomas and the Kerala government over this. Jacob Thomas had taken the stance that there will not be any compromise from his side over the rules.
