Dileep’s remand extended to August 8

The Angamaly judicial first class magistrate court has extended till August 8 the judicial remand period of actor Dileep, who is accused in the February 17 actress abduction case in Kochi. The actor missed the media spotlight and hoot calls that followed him during each of his public appearances. Post the HC bail denial, the actor appeared before the court ‘virtually’ via Skype as his physical presence was apparently a growing ‘security concern’ to the police.

The Angamaly judicial first class magistrate court assented a shift to the videoconferencing mode via Skype following an application from the police, citing an increased threat to the actor’s safety. The police had made the submission after the High Court dismissal of the bail plea and its observation that there is prima facie evidence to prove the actor’s involvement in the conspiracy.

The court had reserved the judgment for Monday and rejected the bail plea citing convincing circumstantial and scientific evidence presented by the director general of prosecution representing the investigating team.

According to the court, the petitioner, being a noted film actor, can be assumed to wield a considerable command over the industry. Hence in the event of a bail being granted, the possibility of the petitioner influencing or threatening the witnesses, who are also from the same industry, cannot be ruled out.

The actor, arrested on July 10, moved the High Court for bail after the Angamaly magisterial court refused to grant him relief and sent him to judicial custody till July 25. The High Court had reserved its orders on his bail plea after the hearing on July 20. Dileep, charged under various sections of the IPC, including section 120B for hatching the criminal conspiracy, is currently lodged in the Aluva sub-jail.

The police have claimed that Dileep, the 11th accused and Pulsar Suni, the prime accused, conspired to abduct the actress and film a sexual attack on her.

In the remand application, they had also claimed that Dileep held a grudge against the actress for informing his then wife about his alleged affairs and had conspired a revenge on her way back in 2013. The actress, who has also worked in Tamil and Telugu films, was abducted and assaulted for nearly two hours in a moving car inside Kochi. Six people, including Pulsar Suni, were arrested soon after the crime.
