Thiruvananthapuram: Former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president K. Muraleedharan has said the Left Democratic Front’s defeat in the just-concluded local body elections is mainly due to the Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s political dishonesty.
Replying to questions at a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Muraleedharan said the party had disowned all those who had supported it, whether it was the erstwhile Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran), a long-term ally such as the Janata Dal (Secular) or individuals such as Manjalamkuzhi Ali. He accused the CPI(M) of playing the majority card, trying to repeat what it achieved in 1987. “However, this time, the majority communal politics of the CPI(M) enabled the Bharatiya Janata Party to make huge gains,” Mr. Muraleedharan observed.
He said the LDF government should quit office and seek a fresh mandate considering the unpopularity of the ruling coalition. “The LDF is like a vehicle which has suffered a breakdown. It won’t be able to catch up speed in the next six months to earn the people’s support by putting up a better performance,” he said.
