MALAPPURAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has accused the Left Democratic Front government of destroying the credibility of the universities in the State.“The government, in the last four years, destroyed the credibility of our universities. It committed injustice in university appointments and the conduct of examinations,” he said.
Mr. Chandy was addressing the 16th State conference of the Federation of All-Kerala University Employees Organisations (FUEO) at the University of Calicut at Tenhipalam on Thursday. He said serious malpractices had taken place in the appointment of assistants in the University of Kerala. “Even those who did not take the screening test were given appointments,” he said.
Mr. Chandy said 40,000 answer papers of those who took the screening test vanished from the university. The Lok Ayukta found fault with those responsible and recommended action against them. But the State government showed its true colours by moving court against the Lok Ayukta, he said.
Mr. Chandy said Education Minister M.A. Baby had abetted corruption by questioning the Lok Ayukta decision in court.According to him, it was the vigil maintained by the Calicut University Staff Organisation that prevented the Left organisations from resorting to corruption in appointments in that university. He questioned the decision of the university to readmit a law student who had been ousted by the college for brutal ragging.
