Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala, on Sunday, said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan were carrying out a false propaganda on the Rs.2 rice scheme.
In a statement here, Mr. Chennithala said the government had issued orders on February 25 without making adequate budgetary allocation and without specifying the quantity of rice that would be distributed under the scheme. The Chief Minister but continued to mention in his speeches that the government would distribute 12 kg of rice for those above the poverty line and 24 kg of rice to those the below poverty line.
In the absence of budgetary allocation, the government had asked wholesale ration dealers to make upfront payments and deliver stock to ration shops. Wholesale ration dealers had not bowed to the government instructions. The situation showed that the LDF had formulated the scheme to influence voters during the elections, he said.
Mr. Chennithala maintained that the UDF had no role in the Election Commission of India staying the implementation of the scheme. After having sabotaged the UDF scheme to provide rice at Rs.3 a kg, the Achuthanandan government did nothing during its tenure. The people of the State are convinced that the scheme was an election tactic of the government, the KPCC chief said.
