A 26yearold youth who was arrested over the mysterious death of Mishel Shaji Varghese Tuesday said in the Ernakulam magistrate court that he was innocent and that he had played no role in events that led to the girl’s death.
“There were some minor issues between us like in every other relationship,” said Cronin Alexander Baby, who was booked on charges of abetment for suicide.
The Piravom native has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. “She last told me that she was going to the church and that she would call me after that. The next day, when I called her, her phone was switched off,” Cronin told reporters as he was led to the court by police personnel.
The police had said Mishel and Cronin were in a relationship for nearly two years. Police also said that their relationship was going through a rough patch and the youth, who was working in Chhattisgarh, had been continuously trying to contact Mishel before she went missing.
The youth sent 57 SMSes to Mishel on March 4, a day before she went missing and 32 SMSes the next day, police said.
He called her four times on March 4 and six times on March 5. The girl left her hostel on March 5 to go to the church and was reported to be missing since. She was found dead near the Ernakulam wharf on March 6.
The court is likely to consider the bail plea of Cronin Wednesday.
