KOZHIKODE: The Students Joint Council, a joint forum of students of Kozhikode, Thrissur and Kottayam Government Medical Colleges, has pledged their support to the ongoing strike by members of the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA).
Bishrul Shafi of Calicut Government Medical College (GMC) and Blesson John of Kottayam GMC were elected as the joint secretary and secretary respectively of the council. A statement of the council said that it had supported the teachers’ strike as it found that the demands raised by them were ‘just.’
The council plans to launch an agitation to press for an earlier end to the strike so that academics of medical students would not be affected. It said that the demands raised by KGMCTA include a revision of pay scales which had not been undertaken for 13 years, increasing the number of staff which was now not even half the strength required, rescinding the move to appoint MSc graduates as teachers of medical students and ensuring timely promotion. The KGMCTA members have been boycotting classes, internal examinations and university examinations as part of their stir.
