Plan for National Coir Mission: Union Minister

ALAPPUZHA: The Centre is seriously considering a proposal for a national Coir Mission aimed at the development of the coir industry, particularly the export-oriented production sector, Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Dinsha J. Patel has said.

Inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of the Coir Board’s Central Coir Research Institute (CCRI) here on Thursday, Mr. Patel said there would be schemes for various activities, including collection of coconut husk, procurement of coir fibre from other States and incentives to boost exports of coir and coir products.

Assuring all possible help from his side, Mr. Patel said he would ensure steps to wipe out any misunderstanding between the State and Central governments.Calling for close cooperation between the CCRI and the State-run Thiruvananthapuram-based National Coir Research and Management Institute (NCRMI), Mr. Patel said the Centre had been increasing allocation towards grant-in-aid for the Coir Board over a period of time and had provided Rs.58.81 crore to the coir sector in the current fiscal.
