Plea for exempting hotel industry from hartals and strikes

Kochi: Kerala Hotel and Restarunt Association Thursday wanted the hotels and restaurants to be included in the list of essential services saying frequent strikes affected tourist inflows into the ’God’s Own Country’. Frequent hartals, coupled with rising prices, had pushed the hospitality sector into a crisis, Association Secretary Jos Mohan said here.

As a result of the frequent hartals and strikes in Kerala, a well-known tourism destination, domestic and foreign tourists were facing dire problems, he said. Agreeing that there was need to protest against the ’uncontrolled’ rise in prices of petroleum products, he said it should be in a “democratic” way. Considering the importance of tourism sector in the state, tourist infrastructure should be exempted from the hartals, he said.
