KOLLAM: The problem of elderly people living alone at home is becoming grave in the State, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala has said.He was inaugurating the Gandhi Life Mission (GLM), a charitable unit of the Kollam block Congress committee, here on Sunday.
Mr. Chennithala said living alone was affecting the well-being of the elderly and the number of such people was rising. A good number of families were facing the problem. With children going to distant places for studies or employment, more and more elderly were forced to depend on homes nurses than their own children.
P.R. Pratapan, trustee of the mission, said providing pensions to senior Gandhians living in poverty and medical aid to the poor were the main schemes of the mission. The pension scheme got under way last year and four persons were selected as beneficiaries. They are given a pension of Rs.300 a month. Mr. Chennthala distributed this month’s pension to the beneficiaries at the function.
