State witnessing a setback to progressive strides: Finance Minister

KOTTAYAM: Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac has stressed the need to redeem the secular history of the Kerala society. He was speaking on the occasion of the release of the book ‘History of the Struggle for Right to Travel in Thiruvarpu’ written by Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader K. Anil Kumar here on Sunday.

Dr. Isaac said the Kerala society was witnessing a setback to the progressive strides that had taken it through the path of secularism during the age of renaissance. Many reasons could be attributed to the trend, but the core issue is that there has been a failure to find a lasting solution to the burning issues, including unemployment, faced by the new generation.

“Such failures have given an opportunity for the affected to find their own explanations for their condition and to identify enemies of their choice,” he said. The drift towards identifying reservation system as the cause of unemployment and those who enjoy the benefits of reservation as their enemies is an outcome of such thinking, he said.

It is unfortunate that some of the organisations that should have taken corrective measures against this setback themselves were facing internal damages, he said. New moneyed classes have emerged on account of the reform movements and many have found the social organisations that had spearheaded the reformation movement as stepping stones to power and prominence.
