Mystery shrouds the death of a young woman whose body was found in the Kochi Lake near a wharf on Willingdon Island a week ago. The police have concluded that Mishel Shaji committed suicide but her relatives have complained to the chief minister alleging foul play.
The aspiring chartered accountant from Ilanji near Piravom had been living at Palarivattom in Kochi to prepare for her exams. She was last seen on last Sunday leaving the St Antony’s shrine at Kaloor. Her body was found the next evening. Surveillance camera footage shows Mishel leaving the shrine.
Her relatives think that she did not appear to have been stressed out to back the police claim that she had committed suicide. They are also suspicious about two people on a motorcycle seen near the shrine that day.
They want the police to probe if the duo came in search of Mishel. The family plans to step up pressure to ask for a deeper probe before closing the case as a suicide. They want the police to interrogate the people who have spoken to Mishel just before her mobile phone was switched off somewhere at Kaloor.
