Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala alleged here on Tuesday that the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) was selling essential commodities at open market prices, instead of effectively intervening in the market to sell products at lower prices. In a statement here, Mr. Chennithala criticised Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran for making certain remarks on the price situation, terming it an affront to the people. Mr. Chennithala said the Minister was disconnected with reality and insensitive to the hardship faced by ordinary people when the prices of some commodities had gone up by as much as 200 per cent.
During the Sabarimala pilgrimage months, the prices of rice, sugar, vegetables and pulses normally peaked in the State, while the prices of fish and meat fell sharply. However, this year, the prices of fish and meat too had gone up.He said the government conducted its market intervention programmes through Supplyco, Triveni stores, ration shops and Horticorp outlets. But enough essential commodities had not been stocked in these outlets.
