UDF disrupted proceedings in Kerala Assembly alleging land encroachment

Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition UDF Friday disrupted proceedings in the Kerala Assembly alleging encroachment of private and public land by tribals in Waynad district with the “help” of government machinery. The Congress-led UDF members trooped into the well and raised slogans demanding action against the CPI(M)-backed Kerala Adivasi Kshema Samithi (KAKS) activists and ensuring law and order.

Revenue Minister K P Rajendran said government would not spare any encroacher and promised that public land would be retrieved from illegal occupiers. Referring to the land right agitation at Waynad, he said there was no law and order problem.Protestors had only conducted a march to the “surplus land” available demanding land for landless, he said.

Seeking to move an adjournment motion on the matter, V D Sateeshan (Cong) alleged that what was happening in Waynad was “vandalism supported by administration”.The agitators had encroached upon private land and erected tents violating law, he said, a charge refuted by Rajendran.
